Chemische Produkte GmbH. KC-Produkte je malá, inovativní
firma se sídlem v jižním Německu, ve státě Baden-Württemberg

Stream-Coat - selective spray coating method

Selective protective coatings are frequently applied with spray, jet or casting nozzles in systems with coordinate control. The paint is distributed at the nozzle exit with all three methods. This causes the spray pattern to change with increasing distance; the spray trace becomes wider and the coating thickness decreases, as a result.

Previously used selective spray system often display problems in dealing with the specific characteristics of protective coatings. Nozzles and line systems quickly become blocked, and changeovers to different coatings give trouble. The coatings are not free from bubbles or the paint vapours and shadow zones affect the results. Furthermore, semifluid protective coatings, so-called thick-layer coatings or „high solids“, cannot be applied with commercially available spray or casting methods.

Because of this problem, KC-Produkte developed a selective spray method used in systems ready for the market.

 

1.0 How does Stream-Coat work?

In the classical sense, Stream-Coat? is a dispensation method in which the protective coating is applied to the component by using a material nozzle. If connected to a CNC coordinate system coating can selectively be activated for certain areas and the material be applied accordingly. The material application on the component is influenced in its flow by an additional air nozzle in a controlled manner. A continuous paint coating, whose properties depend on the amount of paint and the intensity of the air beam, is created on top of the substrate. Thanks to the displacement, the material application area is widened and even reaches behind the pins of neighbour components or is even driven into shadow zones. The paint beam hardly generates any paint apours and is splatter-free if programming and management comply with the application requirements.

The result is a precise partial spray coating, the borderlines of which are accurate up to a few millimetres.

2.0 Which component geometries must be considered?

The latest Stream-Coat nozzle V2.x sets standards with respect to availability. With an external diameter of 2.5 mm and a tip-to-end length of 35 mm (higher diameter: 6 mm with a length of 12 mm) even densely populated PCB areas can safely be coated down to the bottom. Depending on which electronic components are used on the PCB, distances of 2-3 mm between coating area and paint free zones can be realised.

 

3.0 Which materials can be used?

All commercially available materials can be used as a protective paint. The classic solvent systems or socalled thin-layer paints are particularly well suited. The substances can be made on a silicone, polyurethane, acrylic or any other basis. But a big advantage is the opportunity to apply even semifluid thick-layer paints with high viscosity values.

 

4.0 What plants are available for the Stream-Coat process?

The coordinate based spray coating process is suitable for both, a large number of different versions and high production numbers. In the SSC (Selective Spray Coater) model series, there are systems from the cost efficient desktop model up to the high-end fully automatic system including robot operation. They are using from one to four Stream-Coat? nozzles in parallel or consecutive mode. Thanks to its slim design, the Stream-Coat? nozzle is particularly well suited for accurate coating of densely populated PCBs and between tall components. Thanks to the simple construction, the nozzle can quickly be cleaned, is inured to contaminations in the paint, and can also be used with fast drying systems.

Easy to use and Windows based software is used for programming the paint contours. Daily paint coating is running smoothly based on a large variety of prompts and an automated cleaning function. The system is offered in three different versions for feeding, depending on which type of work is required at the customer’s: From rack, inline with conveyor belt or manually with a changeover table.
